WWDC 2024: iOS 18, macOS 15, and AI Unveiled

Apple's annual World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) kicks off on Monday, June 10, at 10 a.m. PT with a keynote speech from Tim Cook. Last year's WWDC introduced us to the Vision Pro, but this year, Apple is expected to reveal its big plans for generative AI.

Hardware Updates

WWDC usually showcases some hardware updates, but this year might be different. Rumors suggest the keynote might not feature any new hardware. This is surprising since Apple recently held a separate virtual event in May to introduce new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, which focused on the new M4 chip. This makes it unlikely that we'll see new MacBooks or iPhones at WWDC, though those updates can't be too far off.

AI Everywhere

There’s a lot of buzz about Apple possibly falling behind in the generative AI race. Tim Cook has promised big advancements in AI during shareholder calls, hinting at transformative opportunities for users. Apple’s focus will likely be on how generative AI will enhance future versions of their operating systems, especially iOS.

There have been rumors about Apple potentially partnering with Google for Gemini integration in iOS, but more recent reports suggest a possible collaboration with OpenAI. This partnership could mean significant AI enhancements across Apple’s software, similar to what Google has done with Android.

iOS 18 with More AI

The star of WWDC 2024 is expected to be iOS 18, touted as one of the biggest updates in iOS history. Key AI-driven features include:

  • Siri Overhaul: Siri will get a major update, making it more capable of tasks like editing photos, deleting emails, and handling daily chores. Expect a more natural voice, notification summaries, and an advanced version of the Apple Watch.
  • AI in Apps: Safari will have smarter search capabilities, Notes will offer summarization, and Voice Memos will get transcription features.
  • Custom Emojis: Generative AI will allow users to create and customize their own emojis in Messages.
  • Flexible Layouts: Users will be able to place icons and widgets wherever they want on their home screens.
  • RCS in Messages: Apple is finally bringing RCS (Rich Communication Services) to Messages, aiming to improve the experience for Android users. This update, expected to arrive this fall, will help address compatibility issues.

WWDC 2024 promises to be a significant event, particularly with the introduction of AI-driven 'deep medicine' and other innovative AI solutions that could revolutionize healthcare within the NHS and beyond. As we move into this new era of 'deep medicine,' we’re looking at a future where technology not only enhances efficiency but also brings a more compassionate touch to healthcare.
